DUE MONDAY, JANUARY 21, by 7:30 a.m. This week we'll be finishing  The Giver, and we'll be discussing the author's use of several elements of fiction. I want you to think about what you know about how a story is told. Pick one element of fiction: character, setting, conflict, plot, theme. Discuss the author's treatment of that element. That is, how/where do you see the author's attention to and deliberate treatment of that element?  If you are reading non-fiction, you may still be able to discuss those elements. Please see me if you cannot find a way to fit this prompt to your book.   THIS IS THE LAST BLOG OF THE 2nd QUARTER! IT WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY,  JANUARY 25 at 3:00 p.m.

DUE MONDAY, JANUARY 14 by 7:30 a.m. We're starting to see Jonas change in his perception of his community and the way things have always been done there. We're also starting to see an internal conflict: should he allow things to continue or should he try to change his community? Most protagonists in books experience some change and/or face a major decision. Has this happened in the book you are reading at home? If so, explain the change or the necessary decision. If not, explain why not. What is moving the story along if there is no change or decision?

DUE MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2019 by 7:30 a.m. We are several chapters into The Giver. Do you know what the conflict is? You might have thought the conflict would be something about Jonas's assignment, but he really didn't have a choice in the matter. The main conflict has yet to be revealed to us. Do you know the conflict in the book you are reading? If so, tell us about the part of the book in which the conflict was made evident. NOTE: I'm not asking you to explain the conflict; I'm asking you to tell us how you learned about the conflict. If you really don't yet know the conflict, make a prediction, and back up your prediction with evidence from the book.

DUE MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, by 7:30 a.m. This week we'll be learning what Jonas's assignment will be. Each assignment is carefully chosen for each individual and contributes to the benefit of the community in some way. Choose a character from the book you are reading at home. If assignments were given out in that book the way they are given in The Giver, what assignment would that character hope to receive? Explain how you know the character would want that assignment. Even if you are early into a book (as I am), make an intelligent guess and explain your thoughts.

DUE MONDAY, DECEMBER 10 by 7:30 a.m. We're going to be talking about the use and effect of words. Every culture, society, and community has language specific to its citizens. For example, we use words such as "Freedom" and "Patriot" to instill feelings of pride in our country. Think about language specific to your book. Give an example of how words shape a character, the community, or the events of the story.

DUE NOVEMBER 19 by 7:30 a.m. We've been talking about foreshadowing and mood as we've read "The Monkey's Paw." We looked for clues that might be foreshadowing, and we've made predictions. We've also looked at the words the author chose to help create a mood. Now it's time to apply these skills to the book you're reading. (If you are reading non-fiction and having trouble identifying foreshadowing or mood, please see me.) Choose either foreshadowing or mood. For foreshadowing, look for sentences or passages that might be giving you hints about what's coming, and make some predictions. Or, if you are far enough in your book, go back and find foreshadowing and tell at what it was hinting.  For mood, share some of the author's word choices and tell us what mood you believe the author was trying to create.

DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, by 7:30 a.m. Since we talked  about the plot diagram for our National Day of Writing project (and we'll be talking about it more next week), let's apply some of its elements to the books we are reading. Choose either exposition or initiating event. How has the author either built background for the story or initiated the conflict. NOTE: Even non-fiction books will have to provide some context for the story at the beginning.

DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 22,by 7:30 a.m. Since we are peer editing this week, let's apply those skills to the book you are reading. Refer to the Peer Editing handout you received in class, or look under "Files" on my web page. Pick one of the steps on the list and apply it to one or two paragraphs in your book. Be sure to identify the step you are using and to make clear, specific comments.
